The Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS), chartered in 1957, is a non-profit, volunteer-based, educational organization dedicated to the preservation of past, present, and future railroading in Central Virginia. The Chapter owns a number of historic passenger coaches and engines for preservation and for use on excursion train rides.

We are a tax exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code interested in collecting railroad memorabilia, researching the history of local railroads, maintaining our railroad museum, preserving railroad artifacts, and educating the public about railroads and railroad safety.

If you are mesmerized by the sound of a distant train whistle or secretly enjoy being stopped by a train at a grade crossing, our organization is for you. Our membership comes from many backgrounds, occupations, and interests. Come by and share your interests of trains and railroading with others!

The Chapter is always looking for new volunteers. We need people to help restore our large inventory of rail cars, locomotives (steam and diesel), and maintenance of way equipment, car attendants and ticket takers for our excursions, track work, even things as simple as mowing the grass at our equipment yard. Experience is not necessary! (But if you have experience or a mechanical background, we really want to talk to you) If you would like to work with real trains and not just the models just send an email with your contact information and interest and we'll be back in touch with you. Please look on our volunteer page for photos. And check out the Nerail site for more photos!

The Old Dominion Chapter meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 pm at the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 W Broad Street, in Richmond, VA (directions).  Information on upcoming programs can be found here.
